This year we decided to celebrate the 4th of July the way the Pilgrims intended us to--by having an overwhelming feast. I guess technically the Pilgrims didn't celebrate the 4th of July, but I think the Founding Fathers probably would have had a celebratory feast if they hadn't just committed high treason by signing the Declaration, and if the British weren't already attacking.Anyway, rather than go downtown to some of the many wonderful celebrations taking place here in our nation's capital (I was particularly sad that I missed the made-for-day pyrotechnic display at Mt. Vernon which was scheduled from 12:45 -12:50. It sounds amazing, but the thought of walking around through huge crowds at 8 1/2 months pregnant was, well, exhausting...), we stayed home and smoked an 8 lb pork butt and made all the appropriate side dishes--potato salad, baked beans, coleslaw, and corn-on-the-cob. Top that off with some IBC Root Beer, and our celebration was complete. In hind sight, we probably should have invited some people to join our feast because it turns out that we had a little more than we could eat. Either way, we love America and all the delicious food you can eat here!

We missed you this Fourth! Hopefully next year we can celebrate together in DC!
We took the kids to the Charles again to see the fireworks and Charlie cooperated by sleeping the entire time. Will announced that because he stayed up until midnight, he would never go to sleep at 7:30 again. What have we done?!
Boooo... Justin did in fact call and invite us over (on my vm, since that is how we communicate these days) and I was highly interested in the infamous smoked pork butt. In fact, the party we attended didn't start cooking the meat until after we left, so we ended up eating 4th of July empanadas. As this was highly unacceptable to my patriotism (and my stomach), I made Matt stop by Giant on the way home (thank you Giant for being open until 11 pm) and we ate bratwursts around 11:45 pm. Just in the nick of time. :)

Well, I've already told you what you were missing by not joining me (and your fam) at the Provo Parade extravaganza. So, passing from the 4th onto the "new look" of your blog, I must say I was hoping that you'd go for a non-white font that would allow me to see your witty prose in google reader. (...says she whose blog doesn't even load into google reader...)

The problem with switching to a lighter background is that I'd have to go back and manually change all my posts to a darker font color, and there have been kind of a lot of posts since 2006 when I started this blog. I fear you'll just have to visit my blog directly. Just be grateful I'm not using typepad so you don't have to type in a username and password...twice.
Yummy, the Scott cuisine is always a delight. Thad and I at watermelon, homemade ice cream and frozen pizza.
