It turns out the secret to an ideal flying-alone-with-a-toddler experience is sleep deprivation (not benadryl as some of you may have suspected). Despite the fact that we had an early-ish (10:30 am) flight on Saturday, Colton decided it would be best to wait up for me to get back from book group (by some miracle, book group was postponed a week so that I was actually able to attend.) I don't think he (or my mom who was babysitting) anticipated that I wouldn't get home until midnight. Oops. The poor little bug was so sleepy the next day that he slept practically the whole way home, thus making a very enjoyable flight for me and everyone around me.
Note: There is a good chance that extra sleepiness could result in extreme grumpiness. Use this method at your own risk.
Also, I may still resort to drugging him on the 8 hour flight to Hawaii in April...

i don't know if you've tried benadryl before but if not, make sure you test it before your trip! I gave it to Lily before our flight and it had the opposite effect on her. She was bouncing off the walls! Dramamine did the same thing to her.
i am so happy we could keep you up so late:)!
we have been spared by the flying gods and have not had any horrific experiences yet, a few awkward moments here and there, sure. throwing up, diapers, etc...they are kids after all. i think the more they fly the more accustomed they are to what it entails. you are a brave, brave woman to try a flight to hawaii. i will pray for you to have a similarly smooth ride in april!
I drugged both children on the long Hawaii flight. It worked in my favor. I still needed toys, snacks & movies to entertain them though. I'm so glad you are coming out here to see Emily! I know I will see you too.
